I want to be clear in no way am I glorifying drug abuse because that shit is fucked. I have two uncles that passed away from liver failure. This song is more about the regrets I’ve felt after I’ve been consumed by the darkness.
After releasing four highly successful leaks (“Overcome”, “Henry VIII”, “Bring It All Down”, “New King”) over the past 12 months, generating close to 60,000 Facebook Likes, the double-hyphenated Indian-Canadian rapper Drega has released his highly anticpated project Man of the Year.
The 10 song project features all original productions entirely crafted by Drega himself and The Anime Boyz producer Neo Tempus. “Some may see it as a weakness that I decided to produce the whole album with just myself and another person, but from an artist development stand point, it helped me craft my sound and hopefully become a true artist”, states Drega.
This attention to defining a sound is crucial element thoughout Man of the Year, as the majority of the record includes personal songs such as “Overcome”, “Bring It All Down”, “Take Me Home” and “The Moment”. “Simply put, this is a story about a kid born in India, who moves to Canada, goes through all kind of ups and downs, and yet still has a smile on his face.” proclaims Drega.
Features include Juno-nominated The Kid Famous on the ode to fake relationships “Ain’t My Girl” and South Asian rapper by way of New York, Nivla on the hyperactive joint “Superhard”. Even Drega’s selection of features was chosen artistically, as he states, “I didn’t want to do features with just anybody to score “cool points”. My collab with Famous came from collaborating with him on a number of songs we worked on together for his upcoming project and my collab with Nivla is my way of telling South Asian artists that it’s cool to work with each other.”

Fresh off the successful release of Henry VIII, Drega returns with the
third leak of Man of the Year entitled Bring It All Down. The song is
a tribute to the times in life where everything goes wrong and the
only thing that keeps you going is sheer will.
“I was going through alot during that song and felt that regardless of
what anyone says I believe in myself, even if you dont,” says Drega.
Toronto rapper Drega, best known as host of Royalty Radio (91.9 FM CFRE), will release his first single titled “New King” on August 10th. “New King” which is produced by Neo Tempus, displays a more aggressive Drega over an infection synth and aims to bridge the divide between eastcoast and southern hip hop listeners. “I wanted to say something bold, but I also wanted to prove myself as a serious rapper and as an entertainer” Drega says.
Drega who has amassed a facebook page of close to 10,000 “Likes” went on a tear early in the year releasing acclaimed freestyles over Jay-Z’s Run This Town and Drake’s Over. He also leaked a record produced by J.Staffz entitled The Promise which helped to raise his profile among South Asian fans.
Expect more singles from Drega as he prepares to release an EP titled Man of the Year on Decemeber 14th.
“New King” will be available August 10th from the following outlets: iTunes Mexico, IMVU, Rhapsody, Zune, MediaNet, Amazon MP3, Thumbplay, Napster, Spotify, Shockhound, iTunes U.S., iTunes Australia/N.Z., iTunes Canada, Nokia, eMusic, iTunes UK/European Union, iTunes Japan and Bandcamp.
Toronto, Canada – Drega connects with talented producer J. Staffz (produced for G-Unit, Wiz Khalifa, Yung Berg and Joe Budden) to create a song about the immigrant experience.Touching on subjects from racism to seeing snow for the first time, Drega paints a picture of a kid coming to terms with his differences and ultimately succeeding because of them.
Drega told Desihits.com, where the song was first premiered, “I want to talk about things that have never been touched on in music such as the Desi experience, but I want to do it in a way that’s universal and technically savvy”.
Currently Drega is in the studio working with Neo Tempus from The Anime Boyz and will be releasing his first single shortly.
Drega “I know Gandhi didn’t die so I could spit it nice”.
FEBRUARY 18, 2009 – Toronto rapper Drega hooks up with his Royalty Radio co-host and deejay extraordinaire Dj Andre 905 for the remix to Jay-Z’s “Run This Town”. The fifty some odd bar verse features Drega touching on a number of subjects from buying a condo to the work of Mohandas Gandhi. “I feel like people take what Gandhi did for granted, I mean he stopped the British so we could be free, not so I could talk about how big my dick is, even though I do anyway” says Drega facetiously.
The song is a renewal of sorts for Drega as he reignites his passion for witty and raw lyricism. “I decided I don’t want to do fluff anymore. There’s way too much fluff on the radio and even indie artists have their fluffy radio single” said Drega.
Currently Drega is in the studio with producer Neo Tempus from The Anime Boyz working on his next album.
